February on the Riviera

Let’s be honest, February in any European city can be a little on the cold side. However, the key to making your off-season break a success is simply good planning and a little inside info to discover how the locals brush away their winter blues!

The French Riviera is buzzing with life, events and activities even during the winter months. As your Friend In France, we’re happy to share our insider tips and hope you will join us in February this year!

Nice Carnival (Carnaval de Nice) is one of the main attractions this month. It takes places from 14th February to 4th March, during which time the City is full of festival fever with people arriving from all over the world to enjoy the celebrations. The programme of events, which are almost equal in quality of entertainment to the Brazilian and Venetian Carnivals, have something for everyone including ‘larger than life’ floats, singers, dancers, fancy dress, flower shows, light displays, a Mardi Gras, a bonfire, street performers, fireworks displays and more… So if you fancy having a lively time then this is the event for you! To see what you can expect, make sure you visit our Full Event Information here >>>

For the more adventurous we recommend getting actively involved in the Carnival through two fun events which will definitely wake you up this winter…

  • A Carnival Dip in the Mediterranean Sea which takes place at midday on 23rd February on the beach opposite the Ruhl Casino.
  • A Giant Zumba Dance where everyone takes part in dancing ‘Zumba Style’ through the streets of Nice, on Sunday 16th February starting on the Promenade near Ruhl Casino.

By being brave and getting involved you will not only be taking part in the Carnival spirit, but also doing a good deed since funds raised will go straight to the children’s hospital, Lenval. Both events are free of charge for participants and hot/cold beverages and food will be available on site.

Menton Lemon Festival (Fete du Citron) is another major annual celebration taking place this month. Grand exhibitions, in a themed seaside setting, cater to this 81 year old tradition. The area displays an elaborate array of float parades day and night, evening light shows, exhibitions, evening fireworks, natural regional produce, entertainers and much more. In addition, you are able to join the celebrations of the Palais de l’Europe night exhibitions, the Orchid Festival (Festival des Orchidées) and the Arts and Crafts Fair (Salon de l’Artisanat). Guides are at hand to take you to local produce factories, orchards and plantations. Take a look at our Full Event Information here >>>
