The French Riviera is buzzing with life, events and activities even during the winter months. As your Friend In France, we’re happy to share our insider tips and hope you will join us in February this year!
Nice Carnival (Carnaval de Nice) is one of the main attractions this month. It takes places from 14th February to 4th March, during which time the City is full of festival fever with people arriving from all over the world to enjoy the celebrations. The programme of events, which are almost equal in quality of entertainment to the Brazilian and Venetian Carnivals, have something for everyone including ‘larger than life’ floats, singers, dancers, fancy dress, flower shows, light displays, a Mardi Gras, a bonfire, street performers, fireworks displays and more… So if you fancy having a lively time then this is the event for you! For the more adventurous we recommend getting actively involved in the Carnival through two fun events which will definitely wake you up this winter…
- A Carnival Dip in the Mediterranean Sea which takes place at midday on 23rd February on the beach opposite the Ruhl Casino.
- A Giant Zumba Dance where everyone takes part in dancing ‘Zumba Style’ through the streets of Nice, on Sunday 16th February starting on the Promenade near Ruhl Casino.
By being brave and getting involved you will not only be taking part in the Carnival spirit, but also doing a good deed since funds raised will go straight to the children’s hospital, Lenval. Both events are free of charge for participants and hot/cold beverages and food will be available on site.
Menton Lemon Festival (Fete du Citron) is another major annual celebration taking place this month. Grand exhibitions, in a themed seaside setting, cater to this 81 year old tradition. The area displays an elaborate array of float parades day and night, evening light shows, exhibitions, evening fireworks, natural regional produce, entertainers and much more. In addition, you are able to join the celebrations of the Palais de l’Europe night exhibitions, the Orchid Festival (Festival des Orchidées) and the Arts and Crafts Fair (Salon de l’Artisanat). The French Independent Winegrower Fair, taking place in Nice from 14th-16th February, is the perfect event for wine lovers. This fair focuses on revealing authentic wines of the highest standards, introduced directly by the farmers who produce them. A rare opportunity to meet the passionate professionals behind your favourite tipple.
The International Games Festival will be hosted at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes from 28th February to 2nd March. This festival will showcase an endless array of games including puzzles, board games and quizzes from more than 30 countries. World Champion gamers will be among the hosts, presenters and demonstrators. The festival line-up includes tournaments, competitions, tips and advice, Q & A time and some giveaways.
Monaco & Monte-Carlo have an event feast this month with a variety of entertainment including the Monaco Chinese Festival, the 30th Primo Cup Trophee Credit Suisse Yacht Race and a very elaborate programme of opera, orchestras and musical events.
Tourettes sur Loup is celebrating the end of the winter flower growing season with its Fete des Violettes (Violet Festival) from 22nd to 24th February with colourful parades and festivities embracing the ‘Violet’ theme.
Be the First to See…a fabulous temporary photography exhibition showcasing the work of famous French photographer and advertising film director Jean-Paul Goude at the Théâtre de la Photographie in Nice. This exhibition will be running from 14th Feb – 25th May but Goude himself will be there to answer questions on Saturday 15th Feb at 14:30.
